POSES AND EXERCISES

One of the basis of Pilates is the development of the 'power house', the area of our body compose of the abdominal muscles, the muscles of our lower back and the gluteus. Also known as the core or the centre, it is what gives the body the stability and the vital energy force. And the development of not only the external but especially the more inner, structural-muscles is what makes of Pilates a very unique and powerful discipline.
In YOGA we learn to relax our body as well as to make it flexible, and this is probably the main difference between an old body - close and constricted - and a young body, able to respond and move with the flow of life.
In Yogilates there is a progression for each level of difficulty, adapting each movement to the necessities and possibilities of each person. In the previous 3 pictures we see the same exercise adapted to the different levels of strength and flexibility; but in each case, the body is receiving equal benefits. In other words, you don't have to wait to be stronger or more flexible in order to receive the benefits of the positions.
This position benefits the whole body and in YOGA is also called the mother of all asanas (YOGA positions), exactly for this quality. Between other things, it benefits the thyroid gland which is mainly responsible for the correct weight and youthful appearance, and so, this exercise helps to retain youthfulness. It also relaxes tension in areas like the neck and the lower back and it vitalizes the nerves, purifies the blood and promotes good circulation.
This position, simply to be standing, is probably one of the most important aspects of a Yogilates class. We want to look better, to feel good, to avoid backaches, headaches, shoulder pain, etc, and at the base of all these is to be able to stand correctly, to sit correctly, to move correctly. Probably more than the 90% of our muscle-skeletal problems come as a result of poor body alignment.

Correct alignment of our skeleton is probably one of the best things anybody can learn in order to achieve a better life-style.
